Abstract
This study dealt with the topic "understanding facial expressions in a child with Down syndrome". It aims to analyze the nature of the difficulties faced by this category in perceiving and distinguishing emotional expressions, focusing on the factors contributing to facilitating this ability . The study was based on theoretical data and previous studies confirming that children with Down syndrome have the ability to understand facial expressions, but this process remains a complex cognitive neuron that requires high mental abilities, which explains the challenges faced by Down syndrome children due to their limited mental and cognitive abilities. In this study, we relied on the descriptive approach in the style of a case study and represented a limited sample of a category of Down syndrome and used the following corresponding and observational tools to achieve the research objectives . The Raven matrices test has also been applied to measure non-verbal intelligence, and the NEPSY test to distinguish facial expressions (joy, sadness, anger, surprise, disgust) .
The results
showed that there was a significant difference between the children in the ability to understand these expressions, depending on the different level of intelligence. Qualitative difficulties such as confusion between visually similar expressions, slowness in response were also observed during the performance of the test . The study also showed that performance is better in basic emotional expressions (such as joy and sadness), and the difficulty increases with more complex expressions such as surprise, disgust or neutrality. The results indicate that the level of intelligence is a contributing factor in understanding and developing this ability .
