Abstract

This study aims to identify the reality of nonverbal communication within the Pedagogical Center for Children with Intellectual Disabilities in El-Brouaghia, by analyzing the forms and behaviors of nonverbal communication used by children in their daily interactions within the educational institution. It also seeks to reveal the extent to which the mental, physical, and psychological characteristics of children with intellectual disabilities affect their ability to use and understand nonverbal communication patterns. This study was based on the observation of the limited number of studies that address the forms and behaviors of nonverbal communication among this group, and to investigate the extent to which the psychological, mental, and physical characteristics of mentally disabled children relate to their ability to use and comprehend the patterns of this type of communication. The study helped achieve a number of objectives, including identifying the most prominent forms of nonverbal communication used within the center, determining the relationship between the general characteristics of children with mental disabilities and their level of communicative interaction, observing how they respond to the educational strategies adopted at the center, and monitoring the challenges and difficulties that hinder the effectiveness of this communication. The descriptive approach was adopted as the most appropriate method for monitoring communication phenomena in their natural environment, using field observation as a tool through a precise scientific observation network that allows for the collection of detailed data on nonverbal communication behaviors. A purposive sample of 50 children was selected from among those registered at the center Taking into account the availability of a certain level of ability to understand and comprehend, which allows for observing clear patterns of non-verbal communication that are amenable to analysis. The study results showed that nonverbal communication is an effective means of enhancing the educational process at the center. It significantly contributes to facilitating interaction between educators and children and improving understanding and comprehension of educational messages, particularly among young age groups who have not yet developed sufficient language skills The results also revealed a clear relationship between children’s individual characteristics and their level of use of various forms of nonverbal communication. They also identified a number of difficulties that hinder effective communication, necessitating the development of educational strategies tailored to the specific needs of this group
