Abstract

The spread of Islam has increased the need for accurate translations of Qur‘an from Arabic to English, underscoring the responsibility of Arab Muslims familiar with both languages to advance research in this field to ensure faithful translation of the Holy Text‘s meanings. This study addresses the linguistic complexities inherent in the Arabic language, and their contribution to semantic loss in Qur‘an translation. It aims to analyze the translation of Surah Al-Qasas by Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali, and seeks to assess the extent to which the target text preserves the intended meaning of the source text with reference to Ibn Kathir‘s interpretation. This exploratory research adopts the qualitative method exemplified in a contrastive analytical approach along with Skopos theory of translation as a theoretical framework to guide the research process and interpretations of the findings. The methodology involved selecting and analyzing twelve verses from the Surah to uncover syntactic, lexical, and semantic discrepancies. The research findings indicate that the translation of Qur‘an into English encounters numerous challenges rooted in the peculiarities of the Arabic language. As the translation accuracy is significantly influenced by the consideration of the target readers‘ cultural background and the verses‘ historical aspects as well, the study concludes that a more nuanced translation is essential to preserve the integrity of Qur‘anic texts‘ meanings.
