Abstract
A large number of students face difficulties in understanding the
information they receive from their teachers during the lesson, and those
difficulties are due to the lack of attention. It is well-established that
attention is a vital component in every student's learning process; if they
pay attention to the lesson, they will understand it and vice versa. This
study explores the effect of the different teaching approaches in drawing
students’ attention and how they impacts their learning process. In this
context, teaching approaches are defined as a collection of principles,
beliefs, or ideas about the nature of learning, implemented in the classroom.
Any language teaching strategy is based on a theoretical understanding of
what language is and how it may be learned. To answer the research
questions and to test the formulated hypotheses, a survey was distributed to
a population of 47 male and female 1st-year students, plus their teachers
who were asked to answer 21 questions; an interview was conducted with
two teachers and three open questions dedicated to students. The responses
were analyzed using the mixed method (qualitative and quantitative). The
findings showed several factors that affect students’ attention as it revealed
the need to change in both program and the used methodologies.
