Modeling and Simulation of a New Electromagnetic Absorbing Material: Application in Anechoic Chambers

Abstract

This work presents the design, simulation, and experimental validation of broadband electromagnetic absorbers for the 2-18GHz range, targeting applications in anechoic chambers. Several geometries (pyramidal, conical, hybrid, and rounded tip) were modeled using CST Studio Suite and evaluated with three materials: carbonyl iron, NiZn ferrite, and graphite. For each shape, nine combinations of height and base size were tested to identify the geometric parameters that provide the best absorption performance. Simulations showed that pyramidal structures generally provided better performance, especially with graphite at higher frequencies. A hybrid absorber combining ferrite and carbonyl iron also showed promising results. Experimental measurements using a graphite filled waveguide confirmed the simulation trends. This work provides a foundation for future absorber optimization and physical prototyping.
