Abstract
ABSTRACT
The Berber tribes form a significant part of the demographic and cultural composition of the Maghreb countries. Focusing on the history of one of these tribes is of great importance, as it addresses the central axis around which all political, military, and civilizational movements revolve. Since the tribe has held a prominent place in the history of the Islamic Maghreb, we have chosen the "Maghila" tribe from among these Berber tribes, which has an extensive historical and geographical spread. This tribe has contributed significantly to the political and military life of the Middle Maghreb and has played important roles in the history of the Islamic West. Therefore, we chose to make this issue (The Maghila Tribe in the Middle Maghreb and its Political and Civilizational Roles) the subject of our thesis submitted for a Master's degree in the specialization of the history of the Islamic West in the medieval era.
- The Maghila tribe is considered one of the branches of the Banu Faten al-Butriya, which confirms its antiquity and greatness at the beginnings of the Islamic conquest. It then branched into clans and spread in the Middle Maghreb in the outskirts of Mazouna, the vicinity of Tiaret, and Tissemsilt. Most of its people settled in the Far Maghreb, in the areas around Fez, Sefrou, and Meknes, while some of them moved to Andalusia and Cordoba, among other places.
- While the tribe initially played a role in resisting the Islamic conquest, it later joined the ranks of the conquering army and participated in the conquest of the Far Maghreb and then Andalusia. Several branches of the tribe were influenced by the Kharijite movement, producing figures such as Abu Hatim ibn Yaqub al-Ibadi and Abu Qura al-Maghili, who was pledged allegiance to as Caliph. The Maghila tribe also contributed to the establishment of the Idrisid state in the Far Maghreb and provided a safe environment for Abd al-Rahman I of the Umayyads before he set out from the Maghila fortress of Dulul to establish the Umayyad state in Andalusia.
- The Maghila tribe had cultural and intellectual contributions through its jurists and scholars who helped spread knowledge and sciences in the Middle Maghreb and Andalusia. They left behind numerous writings, such as the works of Abd al-Karim al-Maghili in Sudan.
By doing this, we have introduced the Maghila tribe, defined its geographical domain, and highlighted its civilizational, political, and military roles in the Islamic Maghreb during the medieval era, thus contributing to enriching the historical library and opening the door for further research in such studies.
