Abstract

This study aimed to shed light on the difficulties of clinical psychological practice in Algeria by exploring the opinions of clinical psychologists working in various sectors (public, governmental, private). It stemmed from a central problem: identifying the nature and ranking of these obstacles, analyzing their relationship to variables such as gender, workplace, and years of experience, as well as exploring possible solutions from the psychologists' own perspectives. -The study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach and included two main components: Theoretical component, which consisted of four chapters covering the general framework of the study, concepts related to clinical psychological practice, characteristics of clinical psychologists, and the main professional and organizational obstacles hindering their practice. Applied component, which involved a field study and the development of a scale by the researchers to measure difficulties in clinical practice. -The study found the following: The results revealed that the obstacles to clinical practice in Algeria are not due to a single factor but rather the complex interaction of various cultural, material, educational, and organizational factors. From the perspective of clinical psychologists, the most prominent challenges were cultural and material obstacles, followed by academic training deficiencies, and then work-related stress, indicating that the clinical work environment continues to suffer from a lack of societal appreciation, limited resources and equipment, and the absence of proper professional training paths. The findings also showed no statistically significant differences based on gender, which can be understood in light of the fact that the obstacles are more related to the structure of the professional context rather than individual characteristics. This suggests that both male and female psychologists experience similar professional constraints. On the other hand, significant differences were observed based on years of experience, with less experienced psychologists showing greater sensitivity to these obstacles. This may be due to inadequate field preparation during academic training and the absence of clear professional integration programs, making new professionals more vulnerable to feelings of professional confusion and lack of self-efficacy. Regarding the workplace, results indicated that psychologists working in the public sector perceived more obstacles than those in the private sector, which can be attributed to bureaucratic organizational structures, workload burdens, and lack of resources, compared to the relative flexibility offered by the private sector in managing the therapeutic relationship. The study also revealed statistically significant differences in the proposed solutions by clinical psychologists to overcome these difficulties. The most prominent suggestions included organizing continuous training sessions and promoting mental health awareness in Algerian society. Therefore, these findings highlight the need for a multi-level approach to improve the reality of clinical practice in Algeria, one that considers the material and organizational empowerment of psychologists, enhances academic and practical training content, and gives special attention to newly graduated professionals and those working in the public sector.
