Abstract

Adopting English as Medium of Instruction (EMI) has gained significant attention in Algerian tertiary education. In response to this growing interest, this study seeks to explore the attitudes of teachers and students towards the use of EMI at the UM, with a specific focus on the faculties of Science and Technology. By examining teachers’ and students’ attitudes within these academic disciplines, the study aims to provide valuable insights into the feasibility and potential benefits of implementing EMI in this context. To ensure this study's comprehensiveness, qualitative and quantitative methods were employed for data collection. Three instruments were utilized, including two questionnaires distributed to 152 L3 students and 292 teachers from the two faculties. Additionally, classroom observations were conducted during English training courses, and interviews were held with two English as foreign language (EFL) teachers offering these courses. The study’s findings revealed that teachers and students are aware of the importance of English and recognize the need for a shift from the predominant use of French to the incorporation of EMI in Algerian higher education institutions. The study also uncovered a range of positive and negative attitudes towards using EMI among teachers and students. Consequently, the results reflected a mix of acceptance and rejection towards adopting EMI. Based on these findings, both teachers and students expressed optimism for positive outcomes and anticipated the successful integration of EMI. Furthermore, they emphasized the necessity of additional training as a vital step towards successfully implementing EMI in higher education and scientific research institutions. They recognized that providing an extended training period is essential to adapt effectively to this new approach and ensure its positive outcomes. This recommendation underscores the importance of adequate preparation and support to facilitate a smooth transition and maximize the benefits of using EMI at the university level.
