Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the role of working memory components in the acquisition of arithmetic strategies among fifth-grade primary school pupils aged between 10 and 11 years. The research specifically compared pupils experiencing mathematical learning difficulties with those who did not exhibit such challenges. A descriptive comparative design was adopted, and the sample consisted of 14 pupils, equally divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of mathematical difficulties. A purposive sampling method was employed. Pupils in the first group (those with mathematical difficulties) were identified through a comprehensive diagnostic process involving structured interviews with teachers and students, an observation checklist, and the administration of Raven’s Progressive Matrices to rule out intellectual disability. The primary instruments used in this study were Baddeley’s Working Memory Test and the Arithmetic Strategies Test developed by Miloudi Hsini. Appropriate statistical analyses were conducted in alignment with the research objectives to examine group differences. The results revealed statistically significant differences between the two groups. Pupils without mathematical difficulties performed considerably better in both working memory and arithmetic strategy tasks compared to those with difficulties. These findings indicate that working memory plays a vital role in the development of arithmetic strategies. The diagnosis of arithmetic difficulties in the first group was confirmed through triangulated data collection methods, including interviews, classroom observations, standardized tools, and cognitive assessment using Raven’s matrices. The study’s findings consistently supported the initial research hypothesis. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that working memory significantly contributes to the acquisition of arithmetic strategies among primary school pupils and serves as a distinguishing factor between those with and without mathematical learning difficulties. These results underscore the importance of integrating cognitive support strategies in mathematics instruction, particularly for learners with difficulties in this domain.
