Abstract

This study focuses on assessing verbal fluency, both phonemic and semantic, in children with Down syndrome, and examines how these abilities relate to cognitive functioning, particularly IQ. A purposive sample of children with Down syndrome was selected. The descriptive-analytical method was employed, and standardized tests were used to evaluate both types of verbal fluency. The Goodenough–Harris Draw-A-Man Test was also administered to measure nonverbal intelligence appropriate for the children’s age. Results from both quantitative and qualitative analyses revealed significant difficulties in verbal fluency. Participants performed better on semantic tasks than on phonemic ones, suggesting impairments in phonological processing alongside relatively preserved semantic abilities. A positive correlation was found between IQ scores and verbal performance, with children of higher cognitive levels performing better overall.
