Abstract
This study aims to explore the relationship between self-efficacy and health locus of control among patients with type 2 diabetes, recognizing the vital role psychological factors play in enhancing patients’ quality of life and empowering them to manage their condition effectively. In the field of health psychology, it is well-established that understanding the patient's psychological structure—particularly their perceived self-capacity to control their health and their beliefs regarding the source of health outcomes—is crucial in predicting adherence to treatment and engagement in healthy behaviors.
The study employed a descriptive correlational methodology and was conducted on a purposive sample of (120) patients with type 2 diabetes, selected from several healthcare institutions. Two scales were used: the Self-Efficacy Scale based on Bandura’s theory, and the Health Locus of Control Scale grounded in Julian Rotter’s theory. Both instruments were adapted and validated for the Algerian cultural and social context, with appropriate psychometric properties verified.
The findings revealed a statistically significant correlation between self-efficacy and health locus of control, supporting the hypothesis that patients with higher self-efficacy tend to adopt an internal health locus of control, enabling them to more effectively handle the demands of their illness. Additionally, no statistically significant gender differences were found in either self-efficacy or health locus of control.
These results highlight the importance of integrating psychological interventions into awareness and treatment programs for diabetic patients, aiming to enhance their sense of self-control and develop supportive strategies to strengthen their self-efficacy.
