Abstract

The use of the mother tongue (L1) in teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) has been a debatable issue among researchers. While some of them favor the use of L1 in EFL classes claiming that it facilitate the learning process, many others criticize and discourage its use because of its negative impacts on learners. The current work reviews published literature on attitudes towards the use of L1 in EFL classes, teaching methods, and arguments against and for L1 use. Meanwhile, it aims at examining if teachers switch between the MT and English. If they do so, to what extent do they have recourse to it ? It attempts also to find out the reason behind this use. This case study is to be conducted in Ould Chamakdji Mohamed Achour middle school relying on two instruments for data collection: classroom-observations and questionnaire for teachers. However, this work could not be completed due to the difficult conditions which we have passed through due to the pandemic of Covid 19 (Corona virus).
