Abstract
This study aims to analyze the relationship between agricultural labor and social change in Algeria, through a field study conducted on a sample of rural youth in the Médéa province. The research examines the historical transformations in agricultural practices, beginning with the precolonial period, through the colonial era and its exclusionary policies toward farmers, and extending to postindependence agricultural reforms—most notably the Agrarian Revolution of 1971 and the economic liberalization reforms after 1988. The study concludes that changes in agricultural labor are not limited to shifts in production methods, but are closely linked to profound transformations in social structure, lifestyles, value systems, and youth perceptions of agricultural work. Field results show a growing tendency among young people to distance themselves from traditional farming, due to its declining economic and social appeal. The study recommends incorporating sociological dimensions into agricultural policies to ensure sustainable rural development.
