Abstract

Play is an essential tool in the child's cognitive, social and linguistic development, as it represents a world in which the child experiences reality and reshapes it according to his imagination and developmental needs. Among the most influential forms of play in language development, symbolic play stands out, which allows the child to embody roles and characters, express his feelings and thoughts, creating natural contexts for the acquisition of words and the development of language structure, as we find children with autism spectrum disorder suffer from difficulties in communication, imagination and social interaction as in that play, especially symbolic play, which the child acquires in the early stages of two to four, four or five years, and the autistic child does not have this skill. Difficulties in communication, visualization and social interaction, as in that play, especially symbolic play, which the child acquires at early ages from two to four or five years, but when the autistic child does not have this skill, which is an essential factor for language acquisition, it opens a space for indirect expression, and gives them an opportunity to use language in meaningful contexts, which contributes to improving their communicative and linguistic abilities. The current study aims to investigate the role of symbolic play in language acquisition in children with mild autism, and we relied on the use of the descriptive approach in a case study method, as the study was conducted on a sample of (5) cases with mild autism spectrum disorder, including (3) males and (2) females in the clinic. The study was conducted on a sample of (5) cases with mild ASD, including (3) males and (2) females in the private clinic in Ain Wassara, whose ages ranged from (5 to 8) years, and a set of tools were applied, namely the John Raven Colored Sequential Matrices Test to measure the level of intelligence, the Khomsi Oral Language Evaluation Test (ELO), and a set of symbolic games. The results revealed that the hypotheses that symbolic play has a role in language acquisition in autistic children with mild autism, and that autistic children with mild autism have
