Abstract

Through this study, we are trying to measure the relationship between unemployment and economic growth in Algeria for the period: ( 1970 – 2014), and to achieve the objectives of the study, we used some of the macroeconomic variables and we have seen that they help to explain this relationship. It has been shown through the study that there is a negative impact between the unemployment rate slowing for one year and economic growth. This means that the reduction in the unemployment rate in one slowing period contributes to increase the rate of economic growth but the increasing of economic growth and the decreasing of unemployment rate does not necessarily confirm the presence of a strong relationship between economic growth and unemployment and the same thing for the economic policies directed to support the growth which is supposed to contribute positively to the absorption of unemployment, but these policies often lead to increase the economic growth without a significant decline in unemployment rates . The study recommended the need to review the good policy to eliminate unemployment by finding mechanisms to create permanent jobs which would in turn affect economic growth in the long term, as it is supposed to separate between policies of supporting growth and policies to reduce unemployment rates, so the effective recipe for national economic policy aiming at supporting growth must seek to find the optimal mixture of factors of short-term growth and those which have farreaching effects, then work ing to employ them in an optimal way in order to achieve growth and at the same time reducing unemployment density. The first ones focus on economic sectors of direct economic return, particularly sectors that do not receive attention in the current economic policy of the nation, and the second factors are giving special importance specially to sectors absorbing the human element (employment), which is usually a weak economic payback in the short term but the economic effects appear in the long term
