Abstract
A biofilm is a structured community of microorganisms that adhere to surfaces and are
embedded within a self-produced matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS),
biofilms can form on various biotic and abiotic surfaces. It plays a significant role in various
fields including medicine, industry, food safety, and environmental science.
This study focuses on the formation of biofilms by enterobacteria, which are responsible
for colibacillosis in Algeria, the primary objective of this study is to assess the biofilm
forming capacity using tissue culture plate method (TCP) in 96 well plates, and optical
density (OD) value of the formed biofilm that measured on an ELISA Microplate reader at
600 nm on a total of 23 bacterial isolates from the liver of broiler chicken.
The disinfectants utilized in this study include Chlorhexidine, and quaternary
ammonium, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal
concentration (MBC) of these disinfectants are determined. Additionally, the antibiotic
resistance profile of the selected isolates is established by VITEK 2 system.
Furthermore, the fliC,tsh, csgA and PapG II genes are detected using PCR in 23 strains of
E. coli.
The study results show that all strains of enterobacteria can form biofilms, although to
different degrees. Chlorhexidine emerges as the most effective disinfectant then quaternary
ammonium. Additionally, every strain exhibits resistance to at least one of the antibiotics
tested.
The identification of fliC,tsh, csgA and PapG II genes confirms the presence of those genes
in certain selected isolates which provide important insights into their ability to form
biofilm ,these findings emphasize the importance of implementing robust preventive and
control measures to combat the formation of biofilms and antibiotic resistance in
enterobacteria responsible for colibacillosis
