Abstract
Summary of the thesis
In the last two centuries, the Arab countries witnessed persistent attempts to get out of the state of weakness and dependency, which was called the Arab Renaissance. In this regard, all reasons were taken into account. Among the prominent stations in the course of the Arab Renaissance, we find the French campaign against Egypt in 1798 AD, which is an important event that shocked the Arab world as a result of Realizing the gap between the Islamic and Western European worlds, this event added new elements to the components of the Arab Renaissance, which were adopted by certain elements, and they saw in adopting and adopting them, most notably democracy, modern sciences, and freedom....
From here, an Arab elite was formed that believed in Western civilization and called for its adoption. The coming events were a contributing factor to its development through the increasing friction between the Western and Arab sides, especially with regard to the Arab scientific missions to Europe during the nineteenth century and the missionaries who practiced teaching through the various schools that were established. Building it, these elites carried Western ideas to preach them in various parts of the Arab world, led by Rifa’a al-Tahtawi, Shibli al-Shamail, and Farah Antoun... This was demonstrated in a group of manifestations that represented examples of these attempts, beginning with the era of Muhammad Ali Pasha, who worked to build a strong state based on the models. Europeanism in various fields, from the army to education to administrative organization... Perhaps what draws attention here is that the state of Muhammad Ali Pasha, which he built on European foundations, has fallen and its attempts have ended at the hands of the same European countries that saw this project as a direct threat to them. The Arab elites played the role of The various Christian and Islamic sects played a prominent role in this issue, especially Christians who received great attention from European countries in terms of education, trade, and projects, until they gained significant control over the Arab countries and their capabilities.
As a result of this, some movements emerged in the Arab Renaissance that adopted different positions towards the West and its civilization, some of which were supportive of it and called for the adoption of Western civilization as the best and perhaps the only way to achieve the Renaissance. On the other hand, on the other hand, there were movements that rejected the West and its civilization and saw adherence to Islamic civilization and its components as the ideal path to the Renaissance. Between these two trends, intellectual and ideological battles and confrontations took place that took the Arab renaissance in a direction away from achieving their aspirations and aspirations, the effects of which continue to this day.
