Abstract
Thyroid dysfunction has attracted a great deal of attention during the ongoing pandemic,
because of the imperative role of thyroid hormones in maintaining an organisms homeostasis
SARS Cov 2 depends on ACE2 to enter host cells ; an enzyme receptor that has a vital role
in the rennin angiotensin system and that exists on the surface of numerous cells including
thyrocytes . When this enzyme is occupied by the virus’s S protein it deprives the organism of
ACE2’s anti-inflammatory effects , forcing the immune response to shift from an antiinflammatory
one to an inflammatory response that ends up in the activation of the cytokine
storm that often leads patients to the ICU.
Our work was originally about the impact of covid 19 on thyroiditis patients , the original plan
was to do follow up on thyroiditis patients before , during and after SARS-Cov-2 infection ,
but unfortunately the timing of our study wasn’t in our favor , since our country in general and
our state in particular didn’t register a covid case in over three months . so we conducted a
statistical study in dr.ZITOUNI’s laboratory on thyroiditis along with comparative study
between previous results and more recent ones on thyroid hormones to see if covid19 has
contributed in the elevation of thyroiditis numbers
According to our results , the number of thyroiditis patients has increased in the year of 2021
in comparison to the other years . our results indicate that there are 28 patients in the time line
between January and march in the year of 2021 , while there were only 12 patients in 2018
and 15 patients in 2019 in the same arc of time ( 3 months ) , which suggests that SARS
Cov2 infection could contribute in the manifestation of thyroiditis .
